Canadian National Railway (CN) has partnered with Wabtec to embark on a mission to modernize an additional 60 locomotives in its already existing fleet, taking a step towards enhancing reliability and reducing its rail carbon footprint.
Wabtec's highly proficient services team will undertake the task of modernizing CN's Dash-9 locomotives, thereby augmenting the total modernized fleet to an impressive 110 locomotives. The transformation involves switching from DC-powered traction to AC-powered traction, accompanied by significant improvements such as an engine upgrade and an array of cutting-edge digital solutions, as per CN's official statement on Wednesday.
These upgrades are projected to extend the overall lifespan of the locomotives while providing numerous benefits. CN foresees targeted improvements in fuel efficiency by up to 18%, a remarkable 40% boost in reliability, and an impressive 55% increase in pulling power, emphasizing the advantageous impact of these enhancements.
As a result of this collaboration, CN anticipates a significant reduction in annual greenhouse gas emissions amounting to approximately 50,000 metric tons – a figure equivalent to eliminating nearly 10,700 non-electric passenger cars. In addition, the company aims to repurpose or recycle approximately 11,000 metric tons of steel, further contributing to sustainability efforts.
This promising partnership between CN and Wabtec signifies the railway operator's commitment to innovation and the pursuit of eco-friendly practices. By embracing technological advancements and refurbishing their locomotives, CN is actively pushing boundaries in the realm of sustainable transportation.
