Workers at two natural-gas facilities operated by Chevron in Australia have reached a breakthrough in their labor dispute with the company. The dispute has caused concerns in global energy markets, as the facilities account for approximately 7% of global supply.
The Offshore Alliance, a partnership between two local unions, announced that its members have endorsed three draft enterprise agreements and have agreed to suspend industrial action. This decision comes after workers had previously voted to restart action on October 19, alleging that Chevron had tried to backtrack on a previous agreement recommended by Australia's workplace arbiter.
"We hope this can now be put to rest," said Offshore Alliance spokesperson Brad Gandy.
Chevron has expressed its satisfaction with the endorsement of the agreements and plans to hold an employee ballot next week. If the agreements are approved, they will then be submitted to the Fair Work Commission for final approval.
This development marks a significant step towards resolving the labor dispute and brings hope for a positive outcome for both Chevron and its workers.
